Loch Nith Monster Mash Bash

  • Loch Park south side stands. BBQ & Kitchen
  • Loch Park north side bank. Nith behind it.

Looking for something for the whole NC community to get into, I tried to think of what type of event might interest everybody: young and old.

Came up with: a BBQ sausage & mash bash at Loch Park.

South side stands: get food from the BBQ's and/or the kitchen. Dress up as any type of monster (same as Hall'een).

North side bank: the burning effigy of the Loch Nith Monster (built by Scouts, BB's & school kids/staff) on the opposite high bank (north side) of the park.

This is only an idea which hasn't been brought to the attention of TPTB yet.

What do you think?

The Common Nokk Storytelling Festival?

I was doing a bit of research into this and found:

Nixie
Like a mermaid in appearence, though she is depicted as having two tails, the Nixie is a fresh water amphibious demon who prefers to dwell near civilization. It is said a Nixie can assume human form and is fond of gathering (even shopping) for trinkets and dancing.
The male of this species is called a NOKK.

They tend to live in lakes, ponds, rivers and waterfalls.

Said to resemble an old man with green eyes, large ears and a long wet beard.
Both the Nixie and Nokk are known for drowning small children who play too close to the water. It is also one demon who knowing it's name gives you some power over it. It is said saying it's name 3 times discourages the creature from getting too close.

Another name pertaining to them in Gaelic: Muir-gheilt.

Still only an idea.

Why not organise our own new festival? Others have done it recently.

Scarecrow Festival
[West Kilbride is the first town in Scotland to organise an annual "Scarecrow Festival". The purpose of the Scarecrow Festival is to foster community spirit and civic pride within West Kilbride and its surrounding area. It celebrates West Kilbride's origins as an agricultural community, while looking to the future through the "Craft Town Scotland" initiative.]

There was an uproar in West Kilbride when the news came out in May that the Festival was cancelled this year. It will return next year.

How about getting each local child to design a "Nithy" and put it in their living room window; the community chosing a winner which we will build a large scale model of next year, to burn at the Loch Nith Monster Mash Bash?

Every child, walking to Loch Park with their own wee "Nithy" next year for judging.

Just a thought : )

More details of the Scarecrow Festival with some ideas we could tweek to suit the Common Nokk Festival. Replace "Scarecrow" with "Nithy":

[This is now a very large annual event involving all the residents and many businesses who proudly make and display hundreds of different scarecrows, some very humorous around the community including their gardens. Although the Scarecrow Festival is open to everyone, scarecrow makers do have to complete an entry form and in the past there has been a theme for the scarecrows. The entry fees all go towards the festival and as long as their scarecrows are up by opening day, anything goes. As an added incentive, scarecrow makers can buy scarecrows on stick packs. These packs tell the entry maker everything they need in order to completely make a scarecrow on a stick for the festival. These packs go on sale at the beginning of July. The packs and the entry forms can be found and purchased at some of the craft shops around town, but don’t wait to pick yours up.

This festival is a week long event that opens with a huge parade through West Kilbride and ending at the Kirktonhall Glen where there is a host of afternoon activities for the entire family. This is a free festival for everyone to enjoy and is scheduled for the last part of July in Kirkton Glen in 2009.

In Kirktonhall Glen, you will be amazed at the scarecrows on exhibit, as well as taking in the museum, the galleries and of course your choice of refreshments and meals, not to mention the games, entertainers and the music that will also be available for your enjoyment. Each day there is a list of the events taking place along with the timetable for each so make sure to check for events of interest to you. By doing that, you won’t miss something that you’ve been waiting to see.

Typically the festivals are free and fun for the entire family however they are also used as a fundraising vehicle to raise money to refurbish some buildings and other community and charitable works. It is definitely something worth checking out.] http://www.westkilbride.co.uk/38/scotlands-scarecrow-festival/

I wonder if any of our local youth groups would be interested in helping to organise a Loch Nith Monster Mash Bash. Scouts are renowned for their campfires and BBQ'd burger rolls etc., so maybe they are the ones to see.

CashBack for Communities

is a Scottish Government initiative that uses fund recovered from criminal activity to support positive activities for young people. Grants of up to £1,000 are available to fund the start-up costs of a group or unit, and up to £2,000 to fund an existing group to run a particular programme of activity.

To be eligible, groups must be a member of one of the partner organisations (Youth Scotland, The Scottish Council of the Scout Association, Girlguiding Scotland, Boys Brigade, The Girls’ Brigade in Scotland and Clubs for Young People Scotland) and have members which include young people aged 10 or over. The small grants scheme is targeted at groups that do not have the services of paid youth work staff (i.e. the group and the programme is managed and delivered by volunteers).
