Last-match drama sees Glenafton bring title to New Cumnock
13 June, 2012Glenafton Athletic have brought the Super League First Division title to New Cumnock in the most dramatic fashion possible - clinching the title on goal difference without even kicking a ball as title rivals Shotts fell short.
Going into the final match of the season, Glenafton led Shotts by a point, with a superior goal difference, meaning that the Scottish Junior Cup winners needed to beat Rutherglen Glencairn in their final game to steal the title from the boys from Loch Park.
Glenafton's hopes of the title seemed to have slipped away when they lost their final league match 3-2 to Shotts on 4th June. However, after a 4-3 win over Girvan on Saturday put them in pole position, Shotts then lost 1-0 at Thorniewood on Monday, leaving them needing a win at Rutherglen.
In a tense match on Wednesday night Shotts, who were playing their 52nd match of the season (and seventh in the last 12 days), couldn't break down the home defence, and the match - which by all accounts could have gone either way - finished goalless, bringing the title to New Cumnock.
Both Glenafton and Shotts are promoted, and will play in the Super Premier League next year.
Many fans were following the action on Twitter, nervously waiting for the result coming through, until the official Glenafton twitter feed reported: "FT Rutherglen Glencairn 0 Shotts 0 GLENAFTON are CHAMPIONS ..... Come on You Glens!"
