Local Attraction on TV

  • Arthur Memorial Church

It was great seeing Dumfries House on the first episode of BBC's "Britain's Hidden Heritage" programme on Sunday 14th of August. Dumfries House was really busy the following day, mainly because of it.

If you missed it on Sunday, catch Britain's Hidden Heritage on i player:  http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b013nh00/Britains_Hidden_Heritage_Dumfries_House/

Pity we couldn't create the same interest for the Arthur Memorial Church on Castle Hill, Castle, New Cumnock: 100 years old next year.

You are doing a great job Geoff with this site. The more people know about the Arthur Memorial Church's 100 year history, the better. If there is going to be an event to celebrate, i will gladly travel the 220 mile round trip to be there - Elizabeth McGhee

Geoff Crolley says

I have mentioned a few times that we should try to get the Arthur Memorial Chuch 'listed' but without any interest from locals or councilors.

To me, it is the most historic and important site in the area; perhaps not the church, but the site itself: CASTLE HILL.
The church is important in its own ways: The Free Church, the Arthurs & Beddoes Rees, all are interesting in their own ways to someone.  The now empty shell could be used as a Mining and Agricultural Heritage Centre, explaining the landscape: the work done, the battles lost and won.

I will keep trying for the next few months.

Geoff Crolley says

Is there any connection between Dumfries House, Ayrshire and Beddoes Rees of Cardiff?

For one thing, Beddoes Rees, the chairman of (among other things) North Amman Collieries, lived at number 3 Dumfries Place, Cardiff, also the home of North Amman Collieries. Just along the street was "Dumfries House".
